Takeaways: Jason: This visit was the first time that I considered the Dubai labor force in more than abstract terms. In general, there are no unions, all laborers are ex-pats, if you lose your job then you have 30 days to find another job before having your work visa revoked, and many/most laborers are housed in labor camps. At first I was a little taken aback, but then I considered some of the scenarios for wanting to work in Dubai as a laborer. Some of the laborers, across all industries, may have come from abject third world poverty and, in most scenarios, even working 10 - 12 hours per day for 6 days per week is better than what they had. Unfortunately, the summer time temperatures in the Ducab facilities sounded extreme, but I grew up in southern California and suddenly remembered stories of my uncles and cousins welding in Bullhead City during the summer. In comparison, my family's stories weren't so different from what I was hearing in Dubai. The visit, consisting of a site tour and a few presentations, was very good. It helped me to start forming an idea of how business is conducted in the U.A.E, how intra-Emerite relations are managed, customer demographics, regional customers, and the types of industries that exist in Dubai.
